Second Trimester Pregnancy Week by Week Facts

Second Trimester Pregnancy Week By Week Facts

Here’s a guide to keep you in pace with the changes taking place in your womb in the second trimester pregnancy week by week.

The second trimester lasts from week 14 to week 26.

The 14th Week

Your baby is 2 ounces. It has tiny arms and legs and a prominent heartbeat. You should have lots of fiber in your diet to combat the problem of constipation, which is common in this pregnancy week.

The 15th Week

Your baby has become hairy! The hair helps her to regulate the temperature during birth. Your belly gets larger due to the increase in the size of uterus. It’s time to go for a prenatal check up to ensure your baby is developing properly.

The 16th Week

Your baby has become active. It starts kicking and twisting. Your abdomen will become heavier, as the baby grows further. As you keep a tab on your second trimester pregnancy week by week, do not forget to visit your doctor for amniocentesis. Here, your amniotic fluid is tested to rule out any birth defects in your baby.

The 17th Week

Your baby is becoming chubbier day by day. You are bound to gain more weight.

The 18th Week

Your baby can open her eyes and its digestive system has started functioning.

The 19th Week

Your baby gets covered by a waxy substance in order to shield it from the wet surrounding. This waxy layer also helps in sliding the baby smoothly out of your vaginal canal during delivery. Be prepared for strong mood swings, dry skin, boils and rashes.

The 20th Week

It’s time for you to attend childbirth classes. You may feel pain in your abdomen, which is normal. There are new developments in your baby during this week. If it’s a girl, her sex organs will begin to develop.

The 21st Week

At this stage, there is not much development. If there are twins, you may face swelling of feet due to edema.

The 22nd Week

Your baby’s brain and sex organs are in the process of development. All other organs are completely developed. You may experience back pain due to the pressure exerted by the growing baby.

The 23rd Week

Your baby is hyperactive at this stage. You should be on the alert for preterm labor. Watch out for bleeding, spotting, and contractions.

The 24th Week

You should go for a prenatal check up to rule out the possibility of gestational diabetes.

The 25th Week

Your baby starts developing arteries and veins, and spinal column. Your backache may get severe.

The 26th Week

Your baby’s respiratory system has developed completely by now. You are about to approach the third stage, which is also known as baby stage of pregnancy.

As compared to the first stage, the second stage is relatively easy. Ignorance is not bliss in pregnancy period. Know about second trimester pregnancy week by week and make your journey more enjoyable than fearful.

Ovulation Prediction Myths ? And Facts

Ovulation Prediction Myths ? And Facts

Women and couples seeking information about ovulation prediction will unfortunately find a lot of conflicting information.  Much of this advice is based on discredited theories about how a woman can identify when she’s ovulating. For a woman to accurately pinpoint ovulation requires that she know exactly how long her cycle is and what changes in her body predict when she is entering her fertile phase.  This article will expose the most detrimental ovulation prediction myth and explain one method for predicting ovulation that has been scientifically proven to display over 96% accuracy.

Possibly the most common myth about ovulation prediction is that a woman ovulates on day #14 of her cycle.  First, let’s explain what we mean by “day #14.”  The first day of a woman’s menstruation – when she begins true bleeding – is considered “day #1.”  Some authors and articles proclaim that all a woman has to do is count 14 days from the first day of her period and that is when she will be ovulating.

However, this is dangerous misinformation!  It is based on the mathematically incorrect assumption that most women have a 28-day cycle.  This is simply not true.  As many women know, some cycles can be as short as 18 days or as long as 50+ days.  The error arises from the mistaken belief that because the number of days in the human cycle averages out to be 28 days, that most women have a menstrual cycle that lasts 28 days.

For comparison, let’s assume that you know 10 people who each have one pet and 10 other people who each have three pets.  This averages out to two pets per person.  But of those 20 people, actually NONE of them have two pets!  This is not to say that there are no women who have cycles that are 28 days long – but many women do not have 28-day cycles.
Most ovulation predictor kits tell a woman to begin testing on day 11 of her cycle (counting forward from the first day of menstruation).  Many women following these instructions will ovulate well before or after Day 11, and miss their fertile phase altogether – literally “flushing” their money down the toilet!

One simple solution to the “how do I know when I’m ovulating” problem is to track and view one’s saliva.  Saliva fertility test kits are available for this purpose.  The best are licensed medical devices accountable to regulatory bodies such as Health Canada or the United States Food and Drug Administration.  These kits are durable and reusable, and are often more cost-effective than many disposable urine-examination kits because they require no refills or replacement test strips.  Also, many women prefer to track saliva than urine for hygienic or aesthetic reasons.  The saliva tracking method for calculating fertility is approximately 96% accurate.

Tracking saliva works because, when a woman enters her fertile phase, high estrogen levels cause her mucus membranes to secrete more bio-salts in cervical fluid, nasal fluid, tears and saliva.  These fluids, when dried and viewed through a microscope, appear crystallized or “ferned” during a woman’s fertile phase.

Colleen Biggs, president and founder of the ovulation prediction kit manufacturer OvumOptics, Inc., struggled for years to obtain accurate, reliable information about even basic fertility issues.  Her personal experience with ovulation prediction myths was part of what led her to develop the Ovu-Trac® Ovulation Predictor Kit in 1996.

Facts for Early Labor During Pregnancy

Facts for Early Labor During Pregnancy

Early labor during pregnancy is an early phase of labor which not many women realize until it ends. Ignoring contractions is a common mistake made by many women which results in early labor. Contractions are generally less than 10 minutes apart and last for 45-60 seconds. Some women might experience more frequent contractions, though they are mild and last for few seconds. With time, these contractions get stronger, longer, and closer together. With contractions you might feel pressure in the pelvis, backache or menstrual cramping. And all this can result in early labor during pregnancy.

Mild contractions might start when you are sleeping. Knowing this fact makes the women too excited or too nervous to sleep. And lack of sound sleep results in beginning their labor. Tiredness and fatigue is another reason for early labor in pregnancy which increases the discomfort among women. So if you do not want to face such situations then take sufficient rest.

Eating is restricted during labor. Although it has no relation with the normal process of labor and delivery still many women think that they should not eat once the labor begins. The body feels hungry when the blood sugar level goes down and is required to be raised. It is a fact that the mother’s appetite decreases as labor progresses. And if the mother avoids eating during labor then it reduces the energy which increases fatigue and decreases the ability to deal with the labor stress. Therefore, a pregnant woman should eat something even in the early labor stage in pregnancy.

Another important thing to be considered between the labor and delivery stage is that the mother should not stop performing their regular activities. Many pregnant women are advised by their elders to stop doing daily activities and just lie down for the whole day. This sometimes becomes boring for the women and results in mental and emotional weakness. So women should keep on performing their daily routine activities as long as their body allows them to do so.

As far as sign of early stage of labor during pregnancy is concerned, you should keep an eye on your body reactions. In case you notice mucous vaginal discharge which might be tinged with blood then it means that it is the time to call the labor and delivery nurse. In case it is not tinged with blood then its normal and calling the labor and delivery nurse is not required. With this you may find red streak and thick mucus ‘blob’. This mucus thick plug is formed in your cervix during pregnancy. As soon as cervix softens and starts to open this mucus plug comes out from vagina. This happens approximately three days before the labor begins and is a sign of early labor during pregnancy.

The labor period is dependent on how ripe the cervix is at the first stage of labor and how strong and frequent contractions are there. When the women cervix is about 4 cm dilated and the progress speeds up it indicates the end of the early labor during pregnancy.

Early labor during pregnancy can occur anytime before your last labor stage in pregnancy. Contractions often begin from the back and then gradually move to front. As time passes, the pain increases and this causes changes in the cervix.

Implantation Bleeding During Pregnancy is Scary. Reassuring Facts About Implantation Bleeding

What is implantation bleeding?

It is not unusual that some women experience implantation bleeding in the early stages of pregnancy. Any vaginal bleeding outside implantation bleeding of pregnancy is classified as a threatened miscarriage, meaning the pregnancy is threatening to miscarriage. About 25% of all pregnancies are actually miscarried but 50% of all threatened miscarriages settle down and a normal pregnancy happens.

When does implantation bleeding occur?

Implantation bleeding occurs very early in pregnancy as a direct result of the fertilized egg (your growing baby) burying and snuggling its way into the lining of your womb. Implantation bleeding occurs about 10-14 days after the egg has been fertilized or when conception occurred. This is also around the time when your menstrual cycles would be expected.

Signs of Implantation Bleeding:

Signs of implantation bleeding can vary from one pregnant woman to another. It normally mild in nature and is much lighter than a normal menstrual period.

The color of implantation bleeding:

The color of implantation bleeding can vary form bright red to brown implantation bleeding. Bright red implantation bleeding means that there is an active area of bleeding within the womb and blood is flowing from the site of implantation to the vagina very quickly. It may indicate that implantation has just occurred.

Brown implantation bleeding is the color of old blood. When you get brown implantation bleeding it normally means that when the fertilized egg buried it way into the womb, a little blood was released. The bleeding that occurred at the moment of implantation stayed in the womb for some time so by the time you see it on your underwear or when you wipe yourself it showed up as brown implantation bleeding.

How long does implantation bleeding last?

Most cases of implantation bleeding last for a few minutes to a few days. If implantation bleeding lasts more than a few days then it may be a sign of vaginal infection or a threatened miscarriage.

How heavy is implantation bleeding?

Heavy implantation bleeding is unusual. The only thing you might notice with implantation bleeding is a pinkish or brown discharge when you wipe yourself after you go to the bathroom.

Cramps with implantation bleeding:

Cramps with implantation bleeding can happen. You may even experience cramps with or without bleeding. The reason you may experience cramps with implantation bleeding is because as the fertilized egg buries into your womb, it caused the muscle of your womb to contract. These contractions press on nerve endings and may result in mild to moderate menstrual like pains for 24-48 hours.

What to do if you have signs of implantation bleeding:

Don’t panic if you have any of the above signs of implantation bleeding. Remember 50% of all cases of implantation bleeding end up in a normal pregnancy.

Know your blood type. Depending on your partner’s blood type and if you are a rhesus negative blood type then it may be necessary to have an Rh-immune globulin injection within 24 hours of any pregnancy bleeding.

If you suspect you may be pregnant and your bleeding is from implantation bleeding then do a home pregnancy test. This home test should remain positive. If it is positive and you do not know your blood Rhesus factor, then call your provider for consultation for possible Rh-immune globulin.

Never insert a tampon, douche, or have sexual intercourse while you are bleeding.

Keep track of whether the bleeding is increasing or decreasing and how many pads you are using.

If you feel your pregnancy bleeding is heavier or lasting longer than the above ranges then call your health care provider for consultation immediately.

Bleeding during pregnancy is scary. Your fear is picked up by your unborn child. Intra uterine fear can stay with your child for a lifetime, so constantly reassure your baby that he or she is wanted and loved. Pregnant Women – Some Must Know Facts

It is always good to know about the health of your reproductive system and getting pregnancy basics, before you plan a child. The feeling of having a human life grow within you is something you will wonder about everyday and enjoy every single moment of it. Whether you’re dreaming of motherhood, trying to conceive or already pregnant, you’ve come to the right place.

When a couple has finally decided that they really like to have a baby, and they have accepted the changes that will happen, another discussion must take place. It is also important that you do not just plunge into having a baby without discussing it, and discussing it again, with your partner.

Female sperm swim slower but live longer. If you are trying for a girl, having sexual intercourse 2-3 days before ovulation and abstaining afterwards may increase your chances. If you have a tipped uterus, you may have better luck having intercourse from behind (hands and knees position). By having intercourse in this position it allows the sperm better access to the cervix.

Morning sickness usually occurs in the early period of pregnancy, in the first three months. It is very popular among women, as almost 80% of them have nausea and puke in the morning. There are occasions when a pregnant mother may have to be put on intravenous fluids or given medication. The truth is while nausea is one of the early signs of pregnancy and labeled “morning sickness” it may not strike a pregnant woman just in the mornings.

There may be a number of reasons why a woman gets depressed. Hormone changes or a stressful life event, such as a death in the family, can cause chemical changes in the brain that lead to depression. When to Call the Doctor: When you are pregnant you should not hesitate to call your doctor or midwife is something is bothering or worrying you. Sometimes physical changes can be signs of a problem.

Pregnant women who suffer from nausea can usually tolerate eating small snacks. Iron intake needs to double during the last six months of pregnancy. Smells, certain foods and other things may cause nausea in a pregnant woman at any time during her pregnancy.

In general, women can choose to deliver at a hospital, birth center or at home. Nowadays, most hospitals and birth centers offer birthing classes like Lamaze and breastfeeding support. A woman is considered to be in labour when she begins experiencing regular uterine contractions, accompanied by changes of her cervix – primarily effacement and dilation.

Wanting to get back in shape is a good thing but remember not to rush your body. You have to take extra care of yourself because your baby depends on you now. Learn to appreciate the joys of motherhood and just give shaping up some time. It is important to be realistic about weight loss after pregnancy. It took 9 months to gain the weight so you should not expect to lose it overnight.

It is common for teenage mothers to have had poor preconception health, particularly if the pregnancy was unintended. Teenage mothers may have had an inadequate diet (eg., including insufficient folate which prevents some birth defects) or have exposed her unborn child to alcohol, drugs (including prescription medications), tobacco smoke or other hazards like heavy metals or chemicals. Some pregnant teenagers are so shocked and frightened that they try to cope by ignoring or denying the pregnancy. This means they don’t receive proper antenatal care or miss the safest window of opportunity for abortion.
